...It should be no surprise that substantial numbers of Republicans are seduced by Trump, who proposes knocking the house down and starting over. His demagoguery succeeds not just because of his fame and charisma. In sometimes appalling ways, he addresses the hopes and fears of much of the Republican base. ...WaPo
That's from clear-eyed Eugene Robinson in his opinion piece at the Post today. He's right. It's hard to avoid noticing the infantilism of Republicans, the wah-wah-wah demands of everyone from Mitch McConnell and his determined pout to the manufactured "there's something scary under my bed" attitude of the party "base." Grownups out here look with horror and amusement at adults in the Republican party who believe a wall along our southern border is a sane option.
Trump v. Clinton. Clinton! Unlike Robinson, I hope not. He even recognizes an important reason why she shouldn't be president: "Clinton has exploitable weaknesses — notably the fact that so many voters do not consider her trustworthy."
But Hillary Clinton is a genuine possibility, albeit a compromise that compromises all of us. In the end, Sen. Sanders seems to be the only candidate (in a long time) with a clear understanding of how capitalism could be an effective, useful tool in the hands of more responsible, thoughtful leaders.
