Living down near the border means absorbing local news about the tightening border security over the past several years. Come to think of it, I haven't seen Border Patrol suv's racing down the highway in a long time. Years. Even PolitiFact, after putting the Obama administration's claims through the wringer, concede that the administration is owed some credit for a much better managed border. With the usual exceptions ... in open desert. And some of the credit goes to the lousy economy on our side even as Mexico is booming. More work available in Mexico.
I don't think the compromise we're seeing on an immigration bill could have taken place without the assurance that the US-Mexican border is notably more secure according to recent reports and -- even! -- according to PolitiFact. Now what we need is an immigration bill that's humane, practical, and clear.
