The Atlantic posted today a series of extraordinary photos of the wreck off theItalian coast. When you add it all up -- when you look at the crowds of people on board, the captain who refused to stay with the ship or help in any way, having apparently steered the ship far too close to shore -- the whole, lethal mess seems to be another symptom of the greed and incompetence we seem doomed to suffer from.
The ship was built for profiteering, not for carrying people safely in all conditions. The incompetent captain seems to come from a prevailing culture of "me first." Ironically, the photos of the wreck -- taken by a variety of photographers -- are very (very!) beautiful even though they represent wanton disregard for the innocent.
