The Pew Research folks went out and surveyed Christians about their beliefs and their knowledge about the Bible, religion, and their beliefs. Christians mostly flunked, though evangelicals and Mormon know Bible stories.
Why am I not surprised?
It's not like it was a really hard test or anything.
Among the topics covered in the survey were: Where was Jesus born? What is Ramadan? Whose writings inspired the Protestant Reformation? Which Biblical figure led the exodus from Egypt? What religion is the Dalai Lama? Joseph Smith? Mother Theresa? In most cases, the format was multiple choice. ...NYT
On the whole, atheists, agnostics, Jews and Mormons know more about Christianity than Christians. Most Christians didn't know it was okay to discuss the Bible in public schools or that comparative religion can be taught -- and is.
