NPR got the most truthful-sounding interview with a GlobalPost reporter in Afghanistan I've heard in a long time. The report bears out what many of us suspected: things are not quite what they seem. At the very least, the report appeared to be quite independent of Village-think.
The Village is saying Obama has "bet his presidency" on Afghanistan. If so (wait a minute, I thought the bet was on pulling the economy out, or the health bill, and/or financial reform) then the bet may be turning sour.
