During the Republican Convention in New York (2004) some statistical wag published the findings that the redder the state, the more likely its residents were to use porn, watch TV programs that they denounced in public statements ("Dangerous Housewives" among others), and residents of red states had a greater tendency to stray from their spouses.
In other words, Republicans are less mature and less stable than Democrats. But we knew that, didn't we!
Now Nate Silver is driving yet another nail into the conservative coffin.
Over the past decade or so, divorce has gradually become more uncommon in the United States. Since 2003, however, the decline in divorce rates has been largely confined to states which have not passed a state constitutional ban on gay marriage. These states saw their divorce rates decrease by an average of 8 percent between 2003 and 2008. States which had passed a same-sex marriage ban as of January 1, 2008, however, saw their divorce rates rise by about 1 percent over the same period.
Doesn't this demonstrate that Republicans aren't just against gay marriage, they're against marriage in general? Sheds new light on their effort to save their gay friends from a fate worse than death: marriage.
