I think the Republicans have decided that their political power is more important than the survival of the jobless and indeed the survival of our democratic system. I think they made that assessment over a decade and a half ago. Why, if Democrats have a sufficient majority in the House and a firm hold on the reins and rules in the Senate, are they hemming and hawing?
Time for Democrats to stop playing the Republican game. Ask for the opposition's input, include any useful changes and give them credit for it, but mow 'em down if they obstruct. Do it with a smile, but do it.
Here, by the way, is an area where most seem to agree: "... On resistance to new loans to the automakers, Republicans (79 percent of whom oppose the new monies) are not alone; 61 percent of Democrats and 68 percent of independents are also opposed." Count me among them.
Bobby Jindal is an opportunistic nightmare. But he will be fun to watch. Using the current crisis as a way of advancing his political future (versus like, um, serving his constituents), his motives are far too obvious and probably will add up to a net loss for his prospects. Too much Bobby waving at every camera. Does he remind anyone else of Sarah Palin? Say, how about Jindal/Palin in '12? Now, there's a game for idle Republicans!
