Here's a nice-(fuckin') little piece on our moral and political history of the past 30 years. As someone who is over thirty (and then some), I've been around long enough to be desperately frustrated at the disintegration of meaning of some political terms. Please, I want to take back both "liberal" and "conservative."
When we're young we like Plain Obvious Truth. There is no such thing, of course. Complexity and nuance don't kick in for most of us until we get a little older, into the "yes, but" phase of life that annoys fierce partisans as well as those who never grow up. What's good about the blog post I've linked to here is that its writer manages to drag that line we call The Center several paces back towards the actual center. What's even better is that the real perps of the past ten years+ are not given last-minute pardons. Instead, they are sliced and diced into the most satisfactory bloody heap of words I've seen in a while.
