The Washington Post reports today in some detail on the outrageous misuse of National Security Letters by the FBI. Most NLS's seem to have been the result of what the ACLU notes was a "fishing expedition." After piling up illegality upon illegality, the Post anticipates a very discouraging outcome:
Disciplinary action may be taken when the bureau completes an internal audit, a senior FBI official said in an interview at headquarters Friday.
"May be taken"?
Fortunately, hearings begin this week in Congress -- House Judiciary on Tuesday, Senate Judiciary on Wednesday. Can we hope for a real probe and something more than a slap on the wrist?
