Really. That's the bottom line. Pew Research finds that the only mildly acceptable cut would be to foreign aid. Foreign aid is a tiny, even miniscule, part of US government spending. Even if it were cut altogether, the impact on spending would be virtually nil.
As for the all the rest of government programs, we may think we want cuts but when we get to specifics, the American people overwhelmingly want spending to stay the same or increase.
Even foreign aid gets a net plus.
Like it or not, Obama is on the right side of this issue politically. The Republicans are, in every respect, on the wrong side. That position is compounded by their efforts to hold back any economic recovery with the hope of crippling Obama. People now recognize economic recovery would go a long way towards recovery from debt. Deliberately impeding economic recovery is simply unacceptable. And it isn't even working politically.
I've had (almost) this exact conversation with a very dear Conservative friend of mine. Like!

It's curious how the deficit hawks -- of course, the very same Republicans who sat back through several big-spender Republican administrations -- have managed to live in irreality for so long.
