No progress whatsoever?
I think we have to face that possibility in spite of our fancy digital toys and women in high places. Or maybe most of us have changed but some have not -- and they have quite a lot of power.
There’s a strand of thought — I identify it especially with Corey Robin, although he’s not alone — that says that conservatism isn’t really about the things it claims to be about. It isn’t really about free markets and moral values; it’s about authority — the authority of bosses over workers, of men over women, of whites over Those People.
Corey Robin was born in the late '60's and became a professor of political theory and a writer. He's drawn a bead on American conservatism in a book, a "readable romp through the evils of conservatism," according to the Guardian.
I'm thinking it will be a good read, a reward for getting through the latest election and maybe a way of blotting out the damn "holiday season." When we get to New Year's day, 2013, will we finally feel as though we're in a new century or will Pat Robertson and Paul Ryan and Newt Gingrich still be here?
