The Egyptian president -- Muhammad Morsi -- seems determined to build a power base as quickly as possible and set off, as Juan Cole writes, "a constitutional crisis if there were a constitution." Cole details Morsi's ambitions. But what worried me most, reading Cole's clear, concise comments on the situation in Egypt, was this:

Hurrah for facing down Israel. But what is America trying to accomplish in a situation in Egypt that's already iffy for the left and for the secular population? Are we destined by our military industrial gang to be on the wrong side in Egypt, no matter what most Americans want?
