Is withholding his tax returns a clever strategy?

Ana Navarro, a prominent Republican strategist, has also called on Romney to release more tax returns, telling Politico “I wish he’d hurry up and release more tax returns so this distraction would go away.”

Romney’s father, George Romney, released 12 years of tax returns when he ran for President in the 1960s. Romney provided John McCain with 23 years of tax returns when he was being considered for the Vice Presidential nomination in 2008. ...Think Progress

And then there's the governor of Alabama, a Republican, making a fuss and urging Romney to release them.  

Is there some hidden strategy here? 

Or, does anyone out there have a tinfoil hat that's still working, someone who can pick up vibes from the Romney camp?  Anyone from the old 2008 McCain campaign remember what was in those 23 years' worth of Romney's tax returns?

I have a feeling there are many things Mr. Romney does not want us to know about himself.
I think the Obama campaign knows them and I think the Mccain campaign knows some secrets too.

I'm wondering if republicans are second guessing Mitt. they are not united behind this guy and his religious beliefs are upsetting to many conservatives.
I think republicans know, it's only going to get worse with Romney and they are desperate to find someone else, even at this late date. or they will support a Ron Paul 3rd party candidacy.
I think there may be a surprise at the R national convention and a huge fight.
