The things we don't do particularly well (like giving women, including mothers, full equality, full pay, full control over their own bodies) we celebrate with a "Day." Martin Luther King has a day but most of America and its government treated him like shit. President's Day is celebrated by going to WalMart and ignoring the fact that our presidents are receiving more and more death threats, particularly if they fight for democracy. And let's not even talk about the huge distance between behaving like Christians and celebrating Christmas.
We have this terrible habit of proclaiming one thing and doing the opposite. Like, what are our governors and members of Congress planning to do on Labor Day if not make campaign speeches excoriating labor.
"Mission Accomplished" (not). "War on Terror" (killing, detaining, torturing, demonizing members of another faith). "Enduring Freedom" (wiretapping American citizens -- and hey! we forget that Bush's longest and only successful war was fought against our savings and our homes).
Tom Scocca seems to be in a similarly cynical mood.
It's a good thing that the events of this week completely vindicated every aspect of the past decade's worth of American foreign policy. Otherwise, it might have been alarming to see this story in the Washington Post, updating the situation in Iraq:
*The dead in April alone included generals, police commanders, a deputy minister and the head of Iraq’s tax agency. The wounded included a member of parliament, a judge and the head of the national theater, survivors of attacks on their motorcades.
*Among 50 targeted killings last month, most were carried out by gunmen using silenced weapons, according to Iraq’s Interior Ministry, which oversees the country’s police forces.
Yes, eight years after the invasion of Iraq, the country has been liberated from a corrupt and brutal one-party dictatorship, so that it can enjoy a new political system in which the people cast votes for their government, and then other people murder the officials of that government. And then still other people murder more people in reprisal. It's sort of like instant-runoff voting, only in reverse, and with bullets.
