The American Psychological Association's report showing that abortion (in the first trimester and, in some studies, later) has no affect on the mental health of the woman having the abortion. This has the right to lifers going ballistic and even Google News has this photo up. One of the threats, of course, is to existing anti-choice rulings in some states which rely on the notion that abortion is dangerous for women's health. The APA is getting a lot of flak. A discussion of their report and the repercussions can be found here.
MoveOn is alerting its supporters that the Bush administration "quietly trying to redefine 'abortion' to include birth control. The Houston Chronicle says this could wipe out dozens of state laws that protect women's reproductive freedom and protect rape victims. This 'rule change' doesn't need congressional approval."
Meanwhile, WalMart is up to its old tricks. We know WalMart has a history of intimidating employees and the last thing it wants is unionization of its shop. So WalMart managers have gotten together and are apparently trying to "persuade" employees not to vote for Obama. This is illegal and will be investigated. By the Federal Election Commission. Hmmm...
Update: Dick Polman has a great piece today on the choice v anti-choice positions of the two candidates. Perhaps not great, though, if you're a hardliner. On either side of the issue.
A couple of years ago, my then-employer sent me to buy some items at Wal Mart, a place I would otherwise never shop. The greeter gave me a friendly hello. In reply, I told her I hoped to one day see Wal Mart unionized. A few minutes later, 2 employees appeared out of nowhere and pointedly followed me around the store until I was out the door. It left me wanting to return and organize every friggin one of their stores. I despise that outfit.
