Andrew Sullivan, just about our favorite commentator, tries to leap to Bill Clinton's defense over those iffy remarks made about patriotism and then, bless him, winds up throwing Clinton back on the trash pile, a place where Hillary's hubby seems to hang out these days. Here's part of what Sullivan writes:
I think the statement just speaks to Clinton's staggering sense of ownership of the Democratic party and the unconscious assumption that his wife deserves to be the nominee. I still think the Clintons cannot believe the gall of anyone daring to challenge their power or their specious self-regard. I've said it before, but imagine if Clinton had won over a dozen primaries in a row, was ahead in the delegate count, ahead in the popular vote, and way ahead in the number of states won. Don't you think the pressure on Obama to pull out would be enormous? And wouldn't Clinton regard his persistence as treachery? And yet Clinton in the exact same situation carries on, with a minimal chance of victory, and actually had the gall to offer Obama a veep slot. Who on earth does she think she is? At best it's pure Clinton entitlement. At worst it's white entitlement.
Entitlement is the name of the Clinton game. It was the name of the Bush game. Look where that got us.
That said, check out Sullivan's site today. He has some splendid, some hilarious links to YouTube.

What beats the hell out of me is that the Clinton's are seemingly oblivious to the damage they must be doing to themselves with the superdelegates. That said, at this point it might well have to do more with the fact that they realize she is doomed, and are bitter, rather than any sense of entitlement.

Imagine what would happen if these two embittered, "entitled" people actually reached the White House. And if not, the bitterness of their supporters already appears to be running about as deep as it did after the post Bush/Gore decision in 2000. That's creating yet another chasm in the polity. The Clinton's must recognize that they're doing this. No wonder Richardson got off their train -- though we don't yet know for sure what carrot was offered to Richardson.

treachery? You people have gone totally over the edge. How is it treachery if she already had the nomination sewn up? Your logic is completely flawed. Might be annoying, but how could he betray her if she's on an unstoppable path to win? That's the trouble with Obama's vitriol toward Clinton. And his penchant for smearing Bill will backfire. Obama no longer has any moral high ground and he's calling moronic names in regard to a president who's political history renders Obama's labels idiotic.
In light of the fact that Obama's minister trashed the Clintons in an entirely inappropriate way, I'm not sure what Obama thinks he has to gain here. Of course his die-hard fans will love to hear this swill, but the white folks who are already offended by Rev. Wright will just get their fury pushed to a higher level. Did someone (Dan Schuster) say "amateurish" campaign?
