Col. Morris Davis was the chief prosecutor for the Guantanamo "trials." Now retired, he's speaking out against the system.
But will he testify before Congress? No. He's been forbidden to do so by the Pentagon/White House. Can they prevent Congress from getting the testimony of a retired military officer? Evidently they think they can and evidently Congress is, once again, bending over.
Curiously, though, Col. Davis isn't prevented from speaking out to the media. He gave a long detailed interview on the CBC early this morning, and yesterday wrote an op-ed piece for the LA Times.
Go figure.
There's a reaction to all this from various quarters. Muckraker, for a start. This is likely just another episode in which Congress backs off and the people lose vital information about the function of their government. Something else to keep in mind: every time the administration defies Congress, it's Congress that winds up with egg on its face. We shouldn't be surprised if the Democratic majority, slim though it is, disappears altogether in the 2008 election.
