Tony Blair has been appointed to make the Palestinians more like us. You know, our kind of people. Like the Israelis. Israelis are more European usually. At least that's how I read two paragraphs in today's Guardian.
"His role, to be announced today, will be largely to work with the Palestinians over security, economy and governance."
"It was being stressed last night that Mr Blair's role - in the short term at least - would not be to act as a mediator between the Palestinians and the Israelis, or to become a negotiator for the road map to peace. He might, however, be responsible for trying to persuade the Palestinians to accept the conditions for ending the international boycott of Hamas."
Others have tried and failed.
Worse, Blair's four employers can't seem to agree on what should be done. There's not even a real office to move into. Bottom line? He's there to catch the falling Rice.
"There is considerable suspicion in this town that what we are seeing is Dr Rice washing her hands of this problem. There is no expectation of any breakthrough. Quite the contrary, there is so little chance of success, and she would like Tony Blair to break the bad news," he said.
Kind of like what Bush will be doing when he hands off a failed presidency to the next sucker.
