Gloomy description by Nina Totenberg at NPR of the arguments before the US Supreme Court today in the matter of Texas redistricting. I would have thought this was a no-sweat case but it's nothing of the kind. Totenberg made it sound as though most justices will want to leave the new gerrymandering as is because, they evidently believe, there's nothing wrong constitutionally with partisan gerrymandering. Anthony Kennedy, thought to be the swing vote in this particular case, seemed to side with the conservatives this time.
The New York Times also has an account of the proceedings, as does the Washington Post.
I admit I'm slightly horrified, today, five plus years into the new millenium, that the audio of the arguments isn't immediately available at the Supreme Court's site. To get the pdf file of a transcript, you have to wait six weeks. You could write this off as old-fashioned cute, kinda like Williamsburg. I don't.
