A member of the US military was quoted this morning on NPR news as having realized that the people he's fighting in Iraq are neither "terrorists" or "insurgents," but members of an Iraqi resistance. Juan Cole picks up on a report in the UK -- in the Sunday Telegraph -- yesterday.
Iraqis, rather than foreign fighters, now form the vast majority of the insurgents who are waging a ferocious guerrilla war against United States forces in Sunni western Iraq, American commanders have revealed. Their conclusion, disclosed to the Sunday Telegraph in interviews over 10 days in battle-torn Anbar province, contradicts the White House message that outsiders are the principal enemy in Iraq....
...Of 1,300 suspected insurgents arrested over the past five months in and around Ramadi, none has been a foreigner. Col John Gronski, senior officer in the town, Anbar's provincial capital, said that almost all insurgent fighting there was by Iraqis. Foreigners provided only money and logistical support.
Let's imagine the US is overrun by -- pick a country, maybe China -- and we all form a resistance movement. We welcomed them at first. They were allegedly here just to help us get rid of the frightening rightwing oligarchy which had taken over America. But then we realize they have other purposes. We fight to take our country back from what now appears to be a permanent invasion, not just a good will gesture.
Of course the Chinese invaders call us terrorists and our resistance "an insurgency" which has "foreign elements" in it. They believe this further justifies their invasion.
However, we know that we're on the right side, defending our country. The foreign support? Well, Canada and Britain are helping us with arms and money and logistical support, as are Mexico and Eastern Europe.
